Junior School

The focus of education in Junior School at Bellfield College intends to provide a firm foundation from which independent learners can develop.

Year 6 Students

In accordance with the K–10 Curriculum Framework, our syllabus takes into account the diverse needs of all students. It identifies essential knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes.

It outlines clear standards of what students are expected to know and be able to do in K–10. It provides structures and processes by which teachers can provide continuity of study for all students.

NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority) sets the learning requirements for each stage of primary school. The four stages are:

  • Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten)
  • Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)
  • Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4)
  • Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6)
Year 4B utilising computer room

In K–6, the syllabuses are designed to be taught within the recommended percentages of time for each key learning area (KLA) in a typical school week. The syllabuses state what must be taught in these six key learning areas:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science and Technology
  • History/Geography
  • Creative Arts
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)

Teaching and learning programs are differentiated to cater for all learners, including adjustments and extensions to enable all students to work to their ability. In addition, a range of additional support and/or enrichment programs are available at Bellfield College. These include MiniLit, an early intervention literacy program, MultiLit (Reading Tutor), EAL/D and Enrichment Programs.

Junior School’s Big Crunch

In Junior school, the use of technology is encouraged through the use of interactive whiteboards in all classrooms as well as student computer labs. In addition to this, a set of iPads are available to further integrate ICT into student learning.

Thus, the primary curriculum provides the building blocks for our students to become confident and successful learners, and active, informed citizens.
