History & Philosophy

Our Mission

Bellfield College hopes to fulfill its aims by first acknowledging the vital role of parents as the primary educators for their child. The role of the school is to help facilitate and reinforce the standards and values within the family home.

The programs offered at Bellfield aim to develop the following areas of skill and understanding:

* social (including responsible citizenship)

* personal (including personal growth, emotional stability, and interpersonal skills

* moral and spiritual

* academic & intellectual

* creative/innovative/problem solving

* cultural & environmental

* physical and recreational

Personal & Social:

Bellfield's system of education is personalised, seeking to integrate the pursuit of academic excellence, the acquisition of skills and the development of the student's character through Islamic teachings.

Each student is helped to be the best person he or she can be through our student Personalized Mentor Program, aiming to facilitate the partnership between parents and school in the following ways:

* Parents exercise greater responsibility in the education of their children

* Personal initiative of parents and educators to operate schools and other educational projects which assist parents in their task as the primary educators of their children.

* The education of children is primarily the responsibility of parents and is determined to a great extent by the personal example of the parents themselves.

The student benefits most when there is harmony between the two major learning environments of home and college; therefore, parents and teachers should try to grow in the qualities they wish the students to acquire.

Teachers are vital partners with parents in a common endeavor. The basis of this partnership is a loyal and mutual understanding of each other's complementary roles.

Parents and teachers need ongoing professional formation as educators who are striving for excellence.

The student's behaviour should be the consequence of personal convictions, acquired in an Islamic climate that balances discipline and freedom as the basis for an authentic sense of responsibility.

Moral & Spiritual

The spiritual development of the students at Bellfield College forms an integral part of its philosophy of personalised education. In addition to their academic studies, Children at Bellfield will be offered Qur'anic and Islamic studies.

The School emphasises and will reinforce the primary role parents play in their children's spiritual development.

Students, regardless of their particular school of thought, are encouraged to foster their relationship with Allah (swt) and to develop their spiritual life with a genuine spirit of conviction and commitment. This enables them to be enriched as human beings and to be excellent persons in every sense of the word.

The Illuminations Program will give students the opportunity to acquire a deep understanding of the Islamic faith and its practice. Intrinsic to this is the greatest respect for their brothers and sisters in faith aswell as the wider community.

Academic & Intellectual:

The Curriculum taught at Bellfield College is devised to give our students the best of liberal education, opening minds and hearts to the very best that human civilisation has to offer. Excellence is fostered in every dimension of school life and particularly in studies. Responsibility in studies is a key to character development. Students are encouraged to work hard and to be personally responsible.

Personalised Mentor Programs help students to be self-motivated and to become excellent persons. This teamwork of true professionals based on trust, gives each student an optimum opportunity to achieve their potential and to make a worthwhile contribution to the world.

This is manifested in an ongoing quest for knowledge and behaviour which bespeaks loyalty, integrity, love for Allah (swt) and a commitment to truth. Our children are needed at the forefront of progress to contribute to the humanisation of the world. It is hoped that the students at Bellfield College will take the lead with their fine minds and loving hearts as they strive to be excellent persons.

These objectives can only be achieved through quality education. Research into how children learn, how the brain functions and insights into pedagogical processes have pointed to a process of "inquiry" as an effective way of learning. Inquiry- based learning promotes thought processes.

The total language arts program taught at Bellfield College, with its multi-sensory approach, reflects all aspects of this theoretical framework. It recognises the need for students to understand the mechanics of spelling and grammar and hence actively engages their intellect. It integrates the teaching of the various language strands- listening, speaking, writing, reading and comprehension, appealing to all learning styles. It demands clear thinking and promotes higher-level thinking skills.

The benefits to other subjects are evident, as the ability to solve problems, to decode and comprehend a new range of vocabulary are essential.

The Spalding Method is a total language arts approach because it provides explicit, sequential, multisensory instruction in spelling (including phonics and handwriting), writing, and listening/reading and comprehension.

Spalding instruction develops critical thinking skills applicable across the curriculum. It enables teachers to plan lessons based on continuous assessment of individual needs.

Five Reasons For Spalding:

Spalding is research based.
Spalding develops higher level thinking.
Spalding increases regular and special education student achievement.
Spalding is cost-effective.
Spalding is time-efficient.

Cultural & Environmental:

Sound education only takes place in an environment where students feel valued, respected, and listened to. Students need to develop a healthy sense of their own self worth, including a sense of their individual strengths and weaknesses. In such an environment students are more likely to engage in learning with enthusiasm and confidence.

Bellfield College has a belief in the "integrity of the young."

The School has an essential faith in young people, a positive expectation that the good will emerge from most given situations.

Bellfield College celebrates the uniqueness of each individual.
as it values diversity, respects individual differences, and seeks to celebrate the intrinsic dignity and integrity of every individual.

Bellfield College acknowledges individual achievements, personal bests and encourages personal growth.

Bellfield College seeks to develop a life long "passion for learning."
Contemporary education is concerned with developing attitudes to learning for life and not just immediate outcomes.

"Education happens best in a supportive and caring community".

The sense of being a harmonious community, where personal relationships with others matter, is important at Bellfield College. As communities become larger, they risk becoming institutions where individuals are less easily seen and management and a sense of belonging is lost. Bellfield College's style of operation can remain personal and flexible while it remains of moderate size.

At Bellfield College the child remains at the centre, not the institution. At the same time it is large enough to provide adequate choice and diversity. A sense of comfort and personal safety are also vital precursors to effective education.

Physical & Recreational:

Bellfield College is set on five acres in Rossmore, ten to fifteen minutes from Liverpool; the heart of Sydney's South West. The size and location of Bellfield College caters for a range of curricular and extra curricular activities.

There is an abundance of sporting facilities such as fields and hard courts for sporting and recreational activities. There is a stream that runs through the school providing the student's with a feeling of tranquility combined with a physical resource for their environmental studies.

The infrastructure at Bellfield is modern and state of the art, enhancing and facilitating a positive, resourceful learning environment for each student.

In essence, the environment of Bellfield College will provide a feeling of comfort and security to parallel to that the children experience within the family home, thus enhancing their academic achievement and reinforcing the educational goals of parents for their children.

With the implementation of the above programs working together in synchrony, Bellfield College aims to provide the environment and resources to assist parents in the education of their children, with the aim of assisting the personal and academic growth of the student, family and wider community.
